Not to say that you can't use wood for function, seems like most people here do. Fiberglass is just a tougher and more worry-free stock. It will last longer with much less maintenance. My M1A came in a plastic mossy oak stock and although it shoots good in it I couldn't get past the camo. Now it wears a GI birtch and I also picked up an older Springfield GI fiberglass woodland camouflage stock for days in the field if its going to be really wet weather. The M1A is patterned after the Marine Corps Match M14 stock and is ideal for a heavy barreled, match grade service rifle. It is available without hardware.
